Hey all, I would like to point out that Guide to Literary Agents is hosting the 9th “Dear Lucky Agent” contest with a theme of Woman’s/Upmarket fiction. The link is below along with my submission – feel free to comment and if you are a writer, good luck!
TITLE: Moving On
LOGLINE: A foreign girl moves to America with the husband her parents warned her against, finding herself in a struggle to survive each day after waking to divorce papers and subsequently learning that her family and people back home have become the target of ethnic cleansing.
SUBMISSION (200 WORDS):
Mohira ignored the vibrating cell, her hands occupied with a platter of pumpkin pastry samsa for Brandon’s visitors.
“Would you like a snake?” She placed the platter on the coffee table and smiled at his friends. They were like so many of the Peace Corps members she had seen come to Kyrgyzstan; Robert with his crooked smile and frayed green t-shirt, and Sally with her flower dress down to her ankles and wood-bead necklace.
Brandon stood and kissed her on the cheek. The other two giggled.
“You’re serving snakes?” Sally asked, covering her smile with her hand. Her deeply outlined eyes lingered on Brandon.
“Da,” Mohira shook her head, “yes.” She must have imagined it, Robert was a good looking guy, why would Sally look at Brandon that way?
“She means snacks,” Brandon said. “Don’t you sweaty?”
Robert and Sally burst into laughter. Mohira frowned.
“I mean sweetie,” Brandon said as he inspected one of the samsa.
“Well that’s too bad,” Robert said, “I was getting excited about something exotic.”
“These are exotic.” Mohira stood tall and retreated to the kitchen where the scent of cumin coated beef told her the Pilaf was almost ready – as if Brandon deserved it.
